[PC-USA] 1999-10-17 - Passages About Astrology

Some people take their daily horoscope reading very seriously. Many more, including a fairly good number of Christians, read them simply for fun. On the cover of the latest issue of one of my favorite secular magazines, the boldest headline with the largest font, was about horoscopes for the year 2000. Though it has very dependable health info etc., I didn't buy the magazine, because I felt it could be a bad witness. Today we will look at a little of what God's word has to say about horoscopes.

In the most recent issue (Nov./Dec.) of Virtue magazine (A Christianity Today magazine), Ron Rhodes writes: "It is a form of divination....As such, astrology, including reading horoscopes, is strictly off-limits to Christians." God's word warns us similarly:

Isa 47:13-15 (NNAS) You are wearied with your many counsels; Let now the astrologers, Those who prophesy by the stars, Those who predict by the new moons, Stand up and save you from what will come upon you. Behold, they have become like stubble, Fire burns them; They cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame; There will be no coal to warm by Nor a fire to sit before! So have those become to you with whom you have labored, Who have trafficked with you from your youth; Each has wandered in his own way; There is none to save you.

From a practical viewpoint, it simply is a waste of time, to read horoscopes, as they are not even accurate! If you read them carefully, you will find they are often very broad and could be applied to many people. The Bible contrasts the accuracy of God's followers, whom He imbued with His wisdom, with the incompetency of the astrologers.

Dan 1:19-20 (NKJV) Then the king interviewed them, and among them all none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; therefore they served before the king. And in all matters of wisdom and understanding about which the king examined them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers who were in all his realm. God's men were ten times more accurate than astrologers!

The definition of astrology, according to AOL's online Webster's dictionary: 2 : the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects

The Bible teaches us that rather than celestial bodies controlling our destinies, God is in charge. He is the only Sovereign; He is in control:

1 Tim 6:15 (NNAS) which He will bring about at the proper time--He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords.
