[PC-USA] 1999-07-18 - Verses about Comfort

I think our nation as a whole is in shock, with the apparent deaths of young John Kennedy Jr., his wife and her sister. No matter what our political persuasion, we can see that this family has had what seems like more than their share of suffering in the last three decades. All of us have pain of one kind or another. For example, in the last two weeks, my 250-member church family has suffered four deaths. No matter what causes our pain, God cares. No matter how deep our pain is, God can take care of it. Here is some of what God's word has to say about comfort.

God's Comfort for Us:

(Psa 46: 1 NLT) God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.

(Psa 37:7 NLT) How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings.

(Psa 23:4 NLT) Even when I walk through the dark valley of death I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

(Isa 61:1-2 NASB) The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives, And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn.

(Psa 119:50 NASB) This is my comfort in my affliction, That Thy word has revived me.

(1 Pet 5:7 NLT) Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about what happens to you.

We are to comfort others:

(2 Cor 1:3-4 NASB) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(Romans 12:15 NLT) When others are happy, be happy with them. If they are sad, share their sorrow.
