1999-07-11 - Passages about Holiness
According to The New Bible Dictionary, Second Edition (Tyndale),
to be "holy" means to be set apart, and in God's case is "absolute," while
in ours it means to be "pure" and "chaste." Before Christ died as a substitute
for us on the Cross, and before the Holy Spirit lived in us, we were not
able to be holy. But with the help of the Spirit, we are expected to live
holy lives.
God's Perfect Holiness
Rev 4:8 (NNAS) And the four living creatures, each one
of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and
night they do not cease to say, "HOLY, HOLY, HOLY IS THE LORD GOD, THE ALMIGHTY,
WHO WAS AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME.
Rev 15:4 (NNAS) Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify
Your name? For You alone are holy; For ALL THE NATIONS WILL COME AND WORSHIP
BEFORE YOU, FOR YOUR RIGHTEOUS ACTS HAVE BEEN REVEALED.
Holy Places
Because of God's holiness, before Christ's sacrifice for our sins, those
entering holy places had to follow special procedures.
Exo 3:4-5 (NNAS) When the LORD saw that he turned aside
to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!"
And he said, "Here I am." Then He said, "Do not come near here; remove your
sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy
ground.
Heb 9:2-7 (NNAS) For there was a tabernacle prepared,
the outer one, in which were the lampstand and the table and the sacred bread;
this is called the holy place. Behind the second veil there was a tabernacle
which is called the Holy of Holies, having a golden altar of incense and
the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden
jar holding the manna, and Aaron's rod which budded, and the tables of the
covenant; and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy
seat; but of these things we cannot now speak in detail. Now when these things
have been so prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle
performing the divine worship, but into the second, only the high priest
enters once a year, not without taking blood, which he offers for himself
and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance.
Our Mandate
Our mandate to be holy, as our Heavenly Father is.
1 Pet 1:14-16 (NNAS) As obedient children, do not be conformed
to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy
One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because
it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.
2 Pet 3:11-12 (NNAS) Since all these things are to be
destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct
and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because
of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will
melt with intense heat!
Rom 12:1 (NNAS) Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the
mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable
to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
