[PC-USA] 1999-06-13 - Verses about Courage

According to The New Bible Dictionary (Logos Library System 2.1e), to manifest "hazaq," the Hebrew word for "courage," means to "show oneself strong." Our courage is to come from God, and we as a church are to help each bolster each other's courage.

Psa 27:14 (NNAS) "Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD."

Psa 31:24 (NLT) "So be strong and take courage, all you who put your hope in the LORD!"

Deu 31:6 (NNAS) "Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you."

How to Gain or Regain Courage

Pouring Out Our Fears to God in Prayer

Psa 40:12 (NLT) "For troubles surround me-- too many to count! They pile up so high I can't see my way out. They are more numerous than the hairs on my head. I have lost all my courage."

Psa 40:13 (NLT) "Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me."

Repenting of Sins

Isa 57:15 (NLT) "The high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, the Holy One, says this: "I live in that high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I refresh the humble and give new courage to those with repentant hearts."

Staying close to Christ

1 John 2:28 (NLT) "And now, dear children, continue to live in fellowship with Christ so that when he returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from him in shame."

Holding onto Our Hope of Eternal Life in Christ

Heb 3:6 (NLT) "But Christ, the faithful Son, was in charge of the entire household. And we are God's household, if we keep up our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ."

Heb 6:17-19 (NLT) "God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given us both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can take new courage, for we can hold on to his promise with confidence. This confidence is like a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain of heaven into God's inner sanctuary."

James 5:8 (NLT) "You, too, must be patient. And take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near."

Depending on the Support of Fellow Believers

Isa 41:6 (NKJV) "Everyone helped his neighbor, And said to his brother, "Be of good courage!"

2 Cor 10:2 (NNAS) "I ask that when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I propose to be courageous against some, who regard us as if we walked according to the flesh."
