1999-04-11 - Verses about Doubt
Most if not all of us have doubts sometimes. We may doubt God's very existence,
His power, His love and concern for us as individuals. Here is some of what
His word has to say in regard to doubt.
Examples of Doubts
John 20:25 (NNAS) So the other disciples were saying to
him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands
the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails,
and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.
Psa 14:1 (NNAS) The fool has said in his heart, "There
is no God." They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There
is no one who does good.
Psa 13:1 (NNAS) How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?
Mark 9:19-24 (NNAS) And He answered them and said, "O
unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put
up with you? Bring him to Me!" They brought the boy to Him. When he saw Him,
immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground,
he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth. And He asked his father,
"How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood.
It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy
him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!" And Jesus
said to him, "'If You can?' All things are possible to him who believes."
Immediately the boy's father cried out and said, "I do believe; help my
unbelief.
God's Instructions for Dealing with Doubts
John 20:27 (NNAS) Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here
with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into
My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing."
James 4:8 (NNAS) Draw near to God and He will draw near
to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you
double-minded.
Sometimes when I have passed through times of doubt, I have felt that my
prayers were rebounding, and my Bible-reading was fruitless. But I always
find later, that those feelings were inaccurate. We need to keep seeking
after God. He is there, loving us even when we cannot feel it. If you are
struggling with doubts, please talk to your local pastor about it. There
is no shame in doubting. God knows we have doubts. He knows we are "as dust"
and need help sometimes. If you don't have a local pastor, feel free to write
us at webservants@cfdevotionals.org.
