1999-01-17 - Suffering
This week we will look at verses about suffering. There are some misconceptions
about suffering, such as that if we suffer, it means we are doing something
wrong. Could be, but "it ain't necessarily so." ; )
Who Suffers (all of us) and some Reasons Why:
Mark 8:31 (NKJV) And He began to teach them that the Son
of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests
and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
John 9:2 (NKJV) And His disciples asked Him, saying,
"Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus
answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of
God should be revealed in him.
2 Cor 1:6 (NKJV) Now if we are afflicted, it is for your
consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings
which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation
and salvation
2 Cor 12:7 (NKJV) And lest I should be exalted above
measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given
to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above
measure.
1 Pet 4:12 (NKJV) Beloved, do not think it strange concerning
the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened
to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings,
that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding
joy.
Rom 8:16-17 (NKJV) The Spirit Himself bears witness with
our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs; heirs
of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we
may also be glorified together.
Attitudes toward Suffering:
Acts 5:41 (NKJV) So they departed from the presence of
the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for
His name.
2 Th 1:3-5 (NKJV) We are bound to thank God always for
you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and
the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, so that we ourselves
boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all
your persecutions and tribulations that you endure, which is manifest evidence
of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom
of God, for which you also suffer.
2 Tim 1:12 (NKJV) For this reason I also suffer these
things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and
am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that
Day.
How the Body is to Handle It:
1 Cor 12:26 (NKJV) And if one member suffers, all the
members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice
with it.
Rom 12:15 (NKJV) Rejoice with those who rejoice, and
weep with those who weep.
