1998-08-22 - Jesus Messiah
It has been awhile since I have written a devotional. I would like to begin
next week with an in-depth study of the book of Genesis and continue on through
the Bible. I will include notes as well as some thought-provoking questions.
I am currently working on updating my website and will add additional study
information there. Today's devotional consists of scripture that references
to Jesus as Messiah, as Prince of Peace.
In His Service,
Rick
Messiah - Prince of Peace - Anticipation
Isaiah 48:16 Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; from
the beginning I have not spoken in secret; from the time that it was, there
am I: and now the Lord Jehovah hath sent me, and his Spirit. 1901 American
Standard Version, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.)
1994.
The Son of God
Psalm 2:7 I will tell of the decree: Jehovah said unto
me, Thou art my son; This day have I begotten thee. 1901 American Standard
Version, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1994.
Isaiah's Prophecy of Messiah
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son
is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall
be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace. 1901 American Standard Version, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research
Systems, Inc.) 1994.
Isaiah 53:1-12 Who hath believed our message? and to
whom hath the arm of Jehovah been revealed? 2 For he grew
up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath
no form nor comeliness; and when we see him, there is no beauty that we should
desire him. 3 He was despised, and rejected of men; a man
of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and as one rom whom men hide their
face he was despised; and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he
hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our
peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every
one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he opened not
his mouth; as a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before
its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. 8 By oppression
and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who among them
considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living for the
transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due? 9 And
they made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death; although
he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it pleased Jehovah to bruise him; he hath put him
to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see
his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of Jehovah shall prosper
in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul,
and shall be satisfied: by the knowledge of himself shall my righteous servant
justify many; and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his
soul unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors: yet he bare the
sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Davids Prophecy of Messiah
Psalm 22:1-16 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou answerest not;
And in the night season, and am not silent. 3 But thou art
holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. 4 Our
fathers trusted in thee: They trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
5 They cried unto thee, and were delivered: They trusted
in thee, and were not put to shame. 6 But I am a worm, and
no man; A reproach of men, and despised of the people. 7 All
they that see me laugh me to scorn: They shoot out the lip, they shake the
head, saying, 8 Commit thyself unto Jehovah; Let him rescue
him, seeing he delighteth in him. 9 But thou art he that
took me out of the womb; Thou didst make me trust when I was upon my mother's
breasts. 10 I was cast upon thee from the womb; Thou art
my God since my mother bare me. 11 Be not far from me; For
trouble is near; For there is none to help. 12 Many bulls
have compassed me; Strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
13 They gape upon me with their mouth, As a ravening and
a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, And all my
bones are out of joint: My heart is like wax; It is melted within me.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; And my tongue
cleaveth to my jaws; And thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have compassed me: A company of evil-doers have
enclosed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 1901 American Standard
Version, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1994.
Psalm 69:21 They gave me also gall for my food; And in
my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. 1901 American Standard Version,
(Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1994.
When will Israel Believe
Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David,
and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication;
and they shall look unto me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn
for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for
him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born. 1901 American
Standard Version, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.)
1994.
Messiah's Birthplace Predicted
Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephrathah, which art little
to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall one come forth unto
me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from
everlasting. 1901 American Standard Version, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos
Research Systems, Inc.) 1994.
The Virgin Birth
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a
sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his
name Immanuel. 1901 American Standard Version, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos
Research Systems, Inc.) 1994.
The New Testament Fulfillment
Matthew 1:18-23 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this
wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came
together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 And
Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a
public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But
when he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto
him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto
thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21 And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his
name JESUS; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring
forth a son, And they shall call his name Immanuel; which is, being interpreted,
God with us. 1901 American Standard Version, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos
Research Systems, Inc.) 1994.
