1998-01-21 - Favorite Things
Psalms 136:26 (NCV) Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love continues forever.
Every night when I put my five-year-old to bed, we read a story, say our prayers, and then about a year ago, he started this: We play a game called, "What was your favorite thing today?" It's really a neat thing we do. At first it was just one favorite thing and now it is two. At first it could be the same two things for me and him, now he wants us to have two different things. As this game has evolved, the little fella has become quite smart; he makes me go first! Oh, and of course he expects to be included in the favorite thing! What he is really saying is, "Daddy what are the two favorite things we did together today?" So, if daddy is going to work before breakfast or staying too late, then dad is scrambling around for one favorite thing of the day that includes him, much less two! Try it sometime.
The other night as we finished the game and I was praying silently as I laid with him, a thought hit me like a bolt of lightning: I should do this with God. So, I said, "OK God, My favorite thing You did with me today was this and that." Then , I felt the Spirit nudging me as to say, "OK David, what two things did you do for ME today?" Whoa!!!! Umm.. lets see God, ummm.. I umm.. I well, I umm.. I did pray for that guy at the stoplight, I umm.. lets see.. can I get back with you on this God?
Philippians 2:17-18 (NCV) Your faith makes you offer your lives as a sacrifice in serving God. If I have to offer my own blood with your sacrifice, I will be happy and full of joy with all of you. You also should be happy and full of joy with me.
All our "works" for God, should flow from our gratitude for what Christ did for us on the Cross. Are you all like me? Do you just think about how God blesses you? Do you have the mentality of my five-year-old, "Dad (God) what did you do for me today?" Simple little thing, but it has changed my life. All day long now , I think, man at the end of the day I better have at least two good things for my son, and the least I can do is some service for God. My antenna is way up now, for open doors that God provides, doors that lead to serving Him, doors that lead to being used by God for His purpose and glory. Doors that lead to a chance to talk to others about God, etc.
Well, something to think about, something to chew on. It works for me. A simple little game I play. A simple little way to keep my antennae up for ways to serve God everyday, not to mention the benefits my boy and I get. : ).
Father, use us, mold us, change us, forgive us, bless us, and help us. Lord You are the potter and we are the clay. Mold us to serve You, to make us all that You planned for us to be. Help us to keep our "spiritual antennae" up. Help us to walk everyday with a sensitive heart toward serving You. It is out of our love for Christ that we want all this, in His Name, Amen.
