1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV) Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
Professional football teams are currently preparing for the upcoming season. Players and coaches gather in training camps to concentrate on reviewing the fundamentals and getting into shape for competition. This intensive training will extend for six to eight weeks.
In Paul’s letter to Timothy, Paul encourages Timothy, a young minister, to continue in training. Paul tells Timothy that he needs to concentrate his training on “godliness.” Paul mentions godliness eight times in First Timothy. Paul encourages Christians to live good and holy lives with a deep reverence in God.
How do we as Christians train ourselves in godliness? We can accomplish this training by studying God’s Word, the Holy Bible. We can listen to sermons which explain God’s purposes. We can also spend time in prayer and contemplation. Our training is an ongoing process, and if we neglect it, we lose our focus on God.
Have you spent time training in godliness today?
