[Calvary Chapel] 2020-07-30 - Just as I Am

Most of the time I write about a hymn or other music I divide the page into two columns. Tonight I'm going to talk about the hymn used by Billy Graham at his Crusades to reach out to people who might be looking for help, or curious about this Jesus person, etc. I first heard the song when I was about 12 years old and I was flipping TV channels looking for sports. A very big stadium in New York was full of people listening to Dr. Graham speak. I was in a guest room upstairs in my parent's home by myself. I was caught by what this man had to say. I didn't know who he was, or where he was from. But I listened on for the rest of his speech.

The eyes of everyone in the stands were captivated. As Dr. Graham finished what he had come to say he placed his Bible on the podium and stood tall inviting anyone who had questions, or wanted to know more about Jesus to walk down from the stands. There were people waiting to try to answer their questions or tell them more about this Jesus they had heard about.

I had come in late so I didn't have a lot of real questions yet. But I was curious. As the people kept coming down to the baseball field there was a choir that sang a song I had never heard before Just as I Am, This was sung at every Crusade, I have loved music since I was a young child. This one was special and was a call to anyone who herd it. The first verse starts:

Just as I am without one plea, But that thy blood was shed for me. And that Thou bid'st me come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

There is more to the song. The lyrics fit so many people who have different problems, or pain, or curiosity. It's not hard to find. The thing that strikes me is the number of people who have never heard it before. If you have not, or know someone you want to share it with, please look it up and send the link to it or send the lyrics. Best of all if you can find the lyrics with the music it's a beautiful song with a call to anyone.

Lord Jesus, This song was the first thing that really reached out to me so many years ago. Even today it makes my heart beat faster reminding me that Your blood was what cleansed me of my sins and made me clean several years afterward when two friends finally made everything clear enough for me to want more of you. And to want to share more about you today. Amen

Grace & Peace,
