[CF Devotionals] 2020-05-04 - The Ultimate Fashion Consultant

- - - - - - -

I loved watching The Smurfs cartoon on Saturday mornings. For fun, my dad and I would root for the bad guy Gargamel, and cat Azrael. to get the little blue guys. Fortunately, no smurfs were permanently harmed in any episode.

Vanity Smurf, always with mirror in hand, stuck out to me. I wondered if there were anyone really that vain, self-consumed with appearance - and if so, how transformed he would be with God as a fashion consultant.

The Lord knows fashion. He himself is "clothed with awesome majesty." (Job 37:22)

Some believe a new outfit lifts the spirits. I'm too impatient for shopping to fall into that category., but when God picks the clothing, there is happiness. For he "has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness." (Isaiah 61:10 NIV)

When we follow the Lord's advice, there is always something to wear. "I put on righteousness as my clothing; in justice was my robe and turban." (Job 29:14 NIV) He gives us a robe of joy in place of a sackcloth of sorrow. (Psalm 30:11) The Lord's style is different, out of this world, some critics say.

The Lord views clothing and accessories differently than we do, but probably shares the same opinion on prints and plaid. May we use the Lord's expertise as a guide not to be consumed with what we wear; instead, we should focus on how we look on the inside.

Lord, May I not become blue with vanity and miss the qualities You've given me. May I show kindness to others and be content. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
