2020-01-11 - Follow Me
Matthew 9:9 (NIV) As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
I was recently reading a book about Native American Code Talkers in World War I (a present from Jan), in which new soldiers were heading into battle for the first time. An experienced officer stood in front of the soldiers and offered them encouragement. At the end of his speech, he said that he would personally lead them into battle. He said “Follow me.” And they did.
Jesus called Matthew in a similar manner. Matthew was a tax collector. He was an unpopular man. Jesus was calling Matthew into action. Matthew would be one of the first disciples who would lead the early Christian church. He followed Jesus into battle.
Today, Jesus is still calling us to follow him. The journey will not always be easy. We will have to take stands against evil and against sin. As Sir Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." We will sometimes feel like we are in a battle as we take stands and expose and fight injustice and lies. Jesus, our Savior, will lead us, as we follow his guidance and instructions.. Are you following Jesus?
