2019-12-10 - Second Week of Advent - Faith
Advent Series Week Two
The focus during the second week of Advent is often on Faith. Perhaps you are a person who never doubts and always has perfect, complete faith in God. I actually doubt that is true! But perhaps you are an exception! Or perhaps you are like me and multitudes of others, and have had moments when you doubted that God truly cares about you, or when you doubt that He cares about justice or fairness.
Some people would judge us for that, and say we are sinning by lacking faith. And for sure, we should make faith a goal. But we are human, and we are going to fail. God's word makes it clear that is a normal human emotion, and that the way to deal with it is to be honest about it. and to ask God for help with having more faith. Matthew recorded a good example, that of a man whose son could neither hear nor speak.
Matthew 9:23-24 World English BibleChrist not only didn't condemn the man for his lack of faith; he healed the man's son.
This is a season when many of us are reminded often of the object of our faith - our Lord Jesus Christ who became incarnate for our salvation. We hear about it in sermons, sing it in hymns and choir anthems, read it in meditations and slogans such as "Jesus is the reason for the season." Even the now ubiquitous word "holiday" originally was spelled 'holy day" and was used strictly to refer to religious occasions. The irony doesn't escape me, since it is now used sometimes for the purpose of political correctness. But in actuality, it is a sacred word - IF you look at it that way.
During this season, I hope that you will join me in asking God to make the true message of the season come alive for us, and to help us to have a faith-centered Holy-day season.
