Psalm 46:10 (NASB) - Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

Here, I love the old KJV that I grew up on. It reads: "Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth." Be still, and know that I am God.

Today, I want to talk about silence. We hear the phrase "moment of silence" from time to time. We have a "moment of silence" when someone dies or some other form of tragedy happens, as a time to gather our thoughts and perhaps pray for the affected people - but I think we need to be more intentional than that with our silence.

1 Kings 19:11-13
11And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

As God passed by, a great wind tore the mountains. Maybe, put another way, part of the mountain crumbled in an avalanche. And an earthquake followed. And then, as if that were not enough, a raging wildfire tore through the scene. The avalanche was a lot of noise. The earthquake was a lot of noise.

The roaring fire was a lot of noise. And yet, God was in none of that. What is the noise in your life?

Whatever it is, we have to wait it out. We have to drown it out in absolute silence. Right now, take a few minutes to do just that. Stop reading, and just sit in silence.

Forget about the song running through your head. Forget what you’ll eat later today. Forget what work you still have to do before the day draws to an end. Forget about what the person beside you or the people behind you are thinking. Forget about that person who did that thing that made you feel that way. None of that matters. Nothing matters this moment, except for silence.

Silence … Just Silence.

  • In silence, close your eyes. Let the world fade into complete darkness, and then focus only on the silence. Now, in your mind, invite God alone to speak into that silence. Invite him then shut up your own voice, to listen to his. Listen in the silence.

  • Is God talking to you about some person in your life – boyfriend, girlfriend, or spouse? Does he have something to say about your habits? Listen for whatever he may be telling you.

  • Does he want you to start something? Or to stop something? Does he want you simply to pray for someone he has called to your mind? Sit in silence, until you hear God speak to you.

  • Whatever it is that he has told you, what will stop you from doing it? Whatever it is, silence it! Ask God to help you silence anything that keeps you from hearing and following his voice.
