2019-09-17 - Butterflies
Each Fall, our family enjoy watching Butterflies flying South. One year, at the beach, we counted over 4000 of the yellow Cloudless Sulfurs. After doing this for over 20 years, I noticed something strange this year. A little over a week ago, I noticed that all of our Sulphurs were flying North instead of South, which was startling! After seeing this happen at varying places for over a dozen times, I realized that perhaps they somehow sensed that Hurricane Dorian was approaching to the South, and the butterflies wanted to avoid danger.
In our Christian walk, we need to follow the lead of these lovely, small butterflies. Whether we want to admit it or not, most of us do realize what our “danger zones” are. For addicts, the zone would include hanging around with friends who do drugs. For porn addicts, the zone would obviously be certain television channels or computer websites. For people prone to affairs, the avoidance system would include not being alone with people to whom they are attracted. For someone who enjoys gossip, this would mean not being alone with friends who like to share "dirt" about people. Now if someone ASKS you to help them in a situation, or ASKS you to seek prayer for them, that obviously is NOT partaking in gossip; that is showing Christlike compassion and empathy. To do otherwise would not be good friendship.
All of us have our own areas of weakness and temptation, and God has ALL of us covered. To quote a military slogan, "He has our six." As Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:13 (Message): No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it. I hope that you will join in me in asking God to help us learn from the butterflies, so that we can flee our own temptations, and thus can stay on the straight paths toward God’s will for our lives.
