2019-07-30 - Limited Time
When our family recently drove by a restaurant whose sign warned customers, “Limited time!” The problem was that they didn’t say WHAT was available for a limited time! Was it a sale? Was it a special, a seasonal item or something else? We had no idea what was offered for only a limited time.
But that advertising slogan reminded me that we human beings all face a limited time. We have a limited time on this Earth. Lives can be cut short by anything from abortion to accidents to murders. As a Crime Victim Advocate, I often found myself supporting the families and friends of murder victims. Too many of those deaths came at the hands of loved ones, while some were murdered by some of the 70,000+ gang members in Georgia. That isn’t a typo; that is correct, 70,000. Some are killed in drug deals or robberies gone badly, while others surprised a burglar, or were killed in a dispute with a neighbor. What they all had in common was that they lost their life unnaturally, and they didn’t wake up that day, thinking “Today is the last day of my life. I will be killed today.” (Though Domestic Violence victims do usually live in fear of harm.)
But even for those of us who will die natural deaths, we ALL have a limited lifespan. In 2018, the average lifespan was 84 for us females, while you males make it to 80, on the average.
Some of those who die are “set;” they have believed in Christ as Savior, and they will live the rest of their eternal lives in Heaven, in the presence of God.
But some of them, for varying reasons, have not accepted Christ’s sacrifice for us, and those people will NOT be in Heaven. As Christ said, and as recorded in John 3:16 (NIV) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Each day could be the last day on Earth for ANY of us. I don’t want to be a fearmonger, but I DO want everyone to remember that we all have a limited time to accept Christ as our Savior. A limited time to serve him and glorify Him. A limited time to live our lives here with our family and friends, cherishing every moment. We all need to be cognizant of these things, every single day.
And for those of us who have family members or friends who have not believed in Christ as Savior, we do need to ensure that they have HEARD the Gospel. But that doesn’t mean we have to continue to REPEAT it over and over and over until we alienate them even farther from it! We need to pray for the Spirit’s timing, and realize that we aren’t responsible for it all. God may use us to plant a seed or to water it, but ultimately,. HE is responsible and it is His will and plan that EVERYONE believes in Christ, though He does give us all free will.
As the Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy (and for us),
1 Timothy 2:3b-5 (NRSVA) God our Saviour, 4 who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself a ransom for all.
Whoever we are, we can and should pray for God to touch hearts, bring revival to hearts and to use us as He sees fit in this process.
