Through the years, I have often played the piano at churches where we have been members. Sometimes, I have functioned on church staffs as the full-time pianist; at other times, I have been a sub and a special occasion pianist such as for Easter and Christmas music. I have enjoyed both positions, and it is a good feeling to know that I can fill a need when someone requires a substitute for a week or longer.
During the Civil War, as history students know, most of the front-line Southern soldiers were actually poor, so poor that once their shoes wore out, they couldn’t even replace them. There is a famous painting of many haggard Southern soldiers fighting barefoot in dangerously cold weather. They felt they had no choice. But in the North, it was a common practice for wealthy men to pay someone to take their place in war. These hired soldiers who were their substitutes, and who sometimes died in their place.
We Christians also have someone died in our place on the cross - Christ - when He took our place in payment for sins. But we do not have to pay a cent; all we have to do is repent from our own sins (which means to decide to do our best to stop committing those sins) and then accept Christ’s substitution on the Cross for our own sins.
John 3:16 (RSV) For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Have you repented, confessed your wrongdoing and asked God to forgive you, as you accept Christ’s substitution on your behalf? If not, and you feel led to accept this, please let your pastor know. If you don’t. yet have a local pastor, you may confess, repent and pray the prayer of salvation by yourself. But it is a good thing to share it! So if you wish to share this, or if you have questions, please feel free to write any of your CF Devotionals writers!
