[CF Devotionals] 2019-07-02 Doing Our Part

- - - - - - -

As we prepare to celebrate the 243rd birthday of the United States, some Christians are concerned about what our role should be in plotting the future path of our country. We each have a role to play. Of course, we want to stay within the laws, so pastors may not legally endorse a candidate from the pulpit, churches may not legally hold a campaign event for a candidate, nor give money to a particular candidate - or in an other way violate IRS law. Not only would that be a transgression against the Bible (Romans 13), but also, the church could lose its non-profit status.

But as individuals, not only may we do our part; in fact, we should. So what can we glean from the Bible about this?

Of course, it goes without saying that we all should pray for present and future leaders and for God’s will in elections and all governmental decisions, as as praying for people’s eyes to be opened against lies and slander. I know, from personal experience, that it is frustrating to hear some desperate candidates shamefully making up lies, and leaving out important facts - and even more frustrating to see some gullible people falling for them, as I know that their uninformed votes could change the future direction of a country and the lives of people living here for years to come.

1 Timothy 1:2-3 (TLB) Pray in this way for kings and all others who are in authority over us, or are in places of high responsibility, so that we can live in peace and quietness, spending our time in godly living and thinking much about the Lord.[a] 3 This is good and pleases God our Savior.

Some people think that we should leave it at that, that we should simply “have faith and pray.” While those actions are vitally important, leaving it at that is neither practical nor Biblical, when we CAN do something additional to promote truth, justice and fairness. God gives us information and opportunities for the purpose of using them. If we fail to do so, we are allowing people and countries to fall into Satan’s hands, to sit back and not do something (legal) when we can! We fail God and our fellow man, when we have knowledge and experience in an area, but do not share it to expose lies and share facts. If we fail to defend the slandered, fail to expose a lie or fail to protect the innocent, then we can be committing sins of omission (That is between each of us and God.)

Ephesians 5:11 (ESV)
Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.

Some of us can share with friends during work breaks, social occasions, in emails or on Facebook. Of course, the Bible also tells us to act in love, and we also don't need to be talking ceaselessly about political topics. I know that we had a relative who used to do that, and honestly that drove Richard and me crazy!😁 Our inclination was to change the subject. In fact, in my entire life, I have never been a political person (except for voting and working on one campaign for a friend years ago) But things have reached a point that has never occurred before in our country, in misinformation, radical behavior and beliefs - and the crossroads we face. Richard has been following politics since the 60s, and says the things that are happening are unprecedented. So when someone brings something up or shares something that you know is untrue, you will be remiss if you do not correct it. God uses us as His agents

As Christ taught us, we are to be salt and light wherever He has put us (Matthew 5), and we cannot do that if we do not interact with those around us.
