2019-05-28 Greater Love
John 15:13 (NASB) ”Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
As is usually true, I am writing this devotional to myself, as well!
Since statistics were kept, over 1,300,000 soldiers’ lives have been given in wars, to acquire or maintain freedom.
In the last year in the US, 145 police officers gave their lives in service to us and protection of us. Many others died from suicide, brought on by factors varying from work pressures to hatred fostered against them.
I couldn’t find statistics for the numbers of officer injuries on duty in the US. But over 6000 times per DAY, somewhere in the United Kingdom, officers are attacked.
Around 20 firefighters die in the line of duty each year. More die of lung cancer and other lung diseases, some of which are brought on by the smoke and chemicals they inhale while fighting fires. And too many die of stress-related heart attacks. And others suffered life-changing injuries such as paralysis or the loss of limbs. In Georgia, a motorist recently hit a firemen exiting a firetruck, and the resulting injury required limb amputation. A good reminder, for ALL of us on Memorial Day and every day, is to SLOW DOWN, MOVE OVER when we see any emergency vehicles and PAY ATTENTION.
All of these men and women were living out and dying John 15:13 in its most literal sense. Each one of them was / is someone’s loved one. Someone’s husband. Someone’s son. Someone’s wife or daughter. Someone’s brother / sister / cousin / co-worker / friend / pastor.
I hope that everyone reading this has stopped, today, to think about and thank God for all these people who showed “greater love” for others.
Most of us are not called to literally give our lives for others. But all of us are sometimes called to sacrifice, to show “Greater Love” to our fellow man and woman. We may be asked to sacrifice a planned relaxation day, to help a sick friend. We may be asked to sacrifice money to help someone in need. There are a myriad of ways that God can use us to show “Greater Love” to others. I encourage each one of us (including myself) to ask God how He wants us to show sacrificial love to others.
