2019-04-21 - Happy Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday is a joyous day, evidence that people finally realized who Jesus truly was and honored Him as a rightful King. "They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!" (John 12:13 NIV)
The honor is short-lived, however, and is the precursor for His earthly death and our freedom from sin.
Today is Palm Sunday, and while some churches will acknowledge the day and its significance, some won't. I grew up in a traditional church that gave out palm branches every year, to mark the event. Compared to my preteen daughter who has only brought home palm branches once at church. I looked forward to getting those palms each year. It signified a happy time, when the events leading to Easter were mostly solemn, horrendous, and unfair. I wanted to focus on the Jesus praised, not full of pain. My young mind hadn't grasped the significance of Jesus' death on the cross. He took our place.
For without the gruesome and bloody death, the unjust suffering Jesus endured, you and I wouldn't have a second chance at life. We wouldn't have access to His presence in Heaven, someday.
"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." (John 3:17 NIV)
