[CF Devotionals] 2019-02-20 - Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah

My best recollection of the Zippedy Doo Dah song was the rendition done by Mr. James Baskett (as Uncle Remus on Disney’s Song of the South feature film) included, in part, on at least one VHS video our kids enjoyed many years ago. Walking out over to the steps that go down off our deck into the fenced yard a flash of blue caught my eyes just in time to see the Eastern Bluebird hop from the fence to a branch on the tree behind it. With such a rich blue color flowing down it’s back all the way to the end of its long tail feathers it was immediately clear to me what bird I had seen. The identity fully verified by the wood thrush brown beginning at the bottom of its throat across the top of its breast then tucking under where the wings fold down at the front. I found myself staring at his contrasting beauty next to the bald grey and brown bark of the ornamental pear tree (Pyrus Calleryana). If that wasn’t enough to further brighten the day of this birder, I next was privileged to hear him sing for a few moments. He was so loud and proud of every sound and note combination and happy to share the cylindrical woody stage adjacent to a chipping sparrow. The blue bird line in Zippedy immediately came to mind with this boisterous and clear bantering as they enjoyed a duet of joyful moments. After a wonderful day of my own with my hubby it seemed like the perfect finish as dusk approached.

Have you ever had a day in which it just felt good to be alive? While birds seem to most often express it with songs indicative of what we might call joy, people have several different ways of depicting it. These include dancing, laughing, cheering along, singing, praising, and even joyful tears. If our hearts belong to God, it all happens with his glory in mind. And how the Father loves to bring us joy and hear His praises. I believe it is truly music to his ears. Thank you, Father, for the joy you bring, and the mouth and voice to praise you. May I never take it for granted.

**I want to dedicate this to one of my mother's and my favorite vocalists, Linda Ronstadt, who inspired, amazed and gave it all to her music, before Parkinson’s began to take her singing voice away. She crossed into more diverse places of music than just about any musician I’ve ever known, and brought Mom and me many moments of joy together. Linda still inspires and amazes me with her beautiful spirit, humility, and sense of humor - and says she constantly sings in her mind, despite it all. May we all be inspired to have such courage as hers.

“But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.” (Psalm 5:11 KJV)

“Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about. Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.” (Psalm 32:10-11 KJV)

“And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord.” (Psalm 27:6 KJV)

“He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah. God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.” (Psalm 47:4-6 KJV)

“A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;” (Ecclesiastes 3:4 KJV)

“And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.” (2 Samuel 6:13-15 KJV)

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
My, oh, my, what a wonderful day
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay!

Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder
It's the truth, it's "actch'll"
Everything is "satisfactch'll"
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
Wonderful feeling, wonderful day!
Yes, sir

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
My, oh, my, what a wonderful day
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay!

Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder
It's the truth, it's "actch'll"
Everything is "satisfactch'll"
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
Wonderful feeling, feeling this way!

Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder
It is the truth, it's "actch'll", hm?
Where is that bluebird?
Everything is "satisfactch'll"
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay

Wonderful feeling, wonderful day!
