Matthew 25:21 (NIV)-- His master replied, "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things."
In Matthew 25:14-30, we find Jesus' parable of the talents. A master going on a journey entrusts his property to several of his servants. The master gives these servants various amounts of money called talents. The NIV Study Bible tells us that the current definition of talent, an ability or aptitude, is derived from this parable. The master wanted his servants to wisely use the talents during his absence. When he returned later, he would expect an accounting of their use. How does this apply to us today?
When I was in college, I studied business administration and economics. Some of my favorite courses were in accounting. I seemed to have a talent for balancing books and spreadsheets. Yet I didn't plan to pursue accounting for employment. Over thirty years later, I was asked to serve as treasurer for our church. My talents for accounting were finally to be utilized.
What talents have God given you? Are you using them wisely? Are you a good of faithful servant of your talents?
