[CF Devotionals] 2018-06-16 - The Advice of King Solomon

- - - - - - -

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandment, for this is the whole duty of man.

Solomon spent his whole life looking for wisdom, and he was widely known for his wise judgements and sayings. At the end of his life, Solomon summed up his philosophy of life in the last few verses of the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon said that the duty of man is to "Fear God and keep his commandments."

To "fear God" does not mean to live a life in dread of God. The Good News Bible says, "Have reverence for God." Solomon is telling us that we are to love God and give Him the respect that He is due. Whatever we do each day, we are to do it out of love and reverence for God. And by "keeping his commandments," we show God our adoration or esteem. In the Thesaurus, another word for respect is worship. So by living lives of love and obedience, we worship God. In the end, Solomon gives us a simple formula for living our lives. Are we living lives of reverence? Are we keeping God's commandments? Each day, we have a new opportunity to follow Solomon's advice.
