Matthew 5:15 Neither do people light a lamp and it it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Jesus gathered his disciples and the following crowds on a mountainside, to teach them. The Beatitudes are found in the fifth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus taught them about being merciful and pure in heart. He also talked about being persecuted, and encouraged his followers to be examples for others. He compared being a Christian to being salt, which must be kept fresh, in order to be useful. Jesus then told his listeners that they should be lights in the world.
In our modern society, we rely on electricity for many functions. Perhaps the most important is for light. During Hurricane Irma, we were without power for four days. The sun provided plenty of light during the day, but at night, we used a small battery-powered lantern. That little lantern furnished all the light we needed after dark; we put it on our coffee table, and it provided us with much-needed light. We depended on that little light.
Each of us has His light within us. Jesus wants us to shine our light so that others may see it. Are you hiding your light, or are you shining your light?
