2 Samuel 23:15-17 And David said with longing, "Oh that someone would give me a drink of the water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!" So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David. Nevertheless, he would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD. And he said, "Far be it from me, O LORD, that I should do this! Is this not the blood of the men who went in jeopardy of their lives?" Therefore he would not drink it.

What is it exactly that David is saying here? I admit I was a bit confused the first time I read through it, as well. He asks for a drink of water and then AFTER these guys risk their lives to get some water for him, he decides, "Naw, this is too good for me, so I will just pour it out." David realized something very valuable in this. David didn't think it was too good for him, but rather that it was "too precious to drink" because of the cost of getting it. In Lev 23:13,18,37 wine was used a drink offering. But David went outside the box, so to speak, and understood that this water was more costly than wine because "it was brought to him at the risk of life."

In the same sense, we too should remember that our lives are just as that water. Our lives were made more precious than a "regular" drink offering, because of the cost of life to bring us the "Living Water." When you think of it in those terms, it brings in a whole new way of looking at it. Jesus became our drink offering that was more precious than wine, water, or anything else. Therefore, let us pour out our lives, our very selves, as a drink offering to Jesus - in celebration as our blood was bought by Jesus.

Father, thank you for the price you paid for us. You gave us more than a drink offering; you gave us Living Water, that we may never thirst again. Help us to understand and to remember that the best way to remain refreshed is by pouring ourselves out. In pouring out, fresh Water is poured into us each and every time. May we use this to glorify Your most precious and holy name, Jesus. Amen.
