[CF Devotionals] 2017-10-28 - What About the Sabbath?

- - - - - - -

Matthew 12:11-12 He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep that falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."

For many years, I worked on Sundays, for the FAA. Several times I was asked why I violated the commandment which instructs us to keep the Sabbath holy. Why was I sinning by working on God's day?

As an air traffic control system manager, I was responsible for the safe operation of our nation's aviation system. If certain people didn't work on Sundays, then no one could fly. Commercial, public safety, and military operations would be could down. If doctors and nurses didn't work on Sundays, what would happen to those in our nation's hospitals? If policemen and firemen stopped working on the Sabbath, how would that affect us?

Jesus addressed the Sabbath when confronted by the Pharisees. Jesus said that it is not sinful to do good on the Sabbath. Helping others on the Sabbath is not a violation of God's commandment. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the rules, that we forget their meaning. Caring for and helping others is never sinful.

Like Jesus answered a question that was recorded in Matthew 22:

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
