[CF Devotionals] 2017-05-15 - How to Measure Love

- - - - - - -

Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb. Genesis 30:22 NIV

What does it take to be a good mom? The dictionary defines good as "morally excellent, honorable, and honest." Was Rachel a good mother? She wanted to experience the miracle other women were enjoying, carrying a child, but she became a mother for all the wrong reasons.

Rachel had a loving husband, but still that was not enough. His love and dedication did not keep her happy or satisfied. She put pressure on Jacob to give her the child she wanted. She saw kids as a way to measure her husband’s love.

There was also a competitive and jealous spirit in Rachel. Her older sister Leah was having children, and Rachel did not understand her own bareness. She blamed it on Jacob, but he did not take the bait. Rachel felt desperate and finally got her way–two children through the aid of a surrogate. Finally God granted Rachel a child of her own, a son named Joseph, and immediately she wanted another. Even though Rachel was now a mommy, she still wasn’t completely happy. Nor did it end the struggle between her, Leah and Jacob.

Rachel was not given a chance to raise her second son. She delivered a boy, and before Rachel took her last breath, she named the baby Ben-Oni, which means "son of my sorrow." Jacob changed it to Benjamin, a more positive name meaning "son of my right hand." I confess I have a difficult time relating to Rachel. Instead of focusing on the contributions a child could bring to the world, Rachel saw a child as a vehicle to improve her own life. She did not see there was value in herself except by being a mother.

It’s easy to react to what’s around you. That’s what Rachel did. As a believer in God, we have to gain a larger view. Although we may experience loss and hardship, we have to continue to give God praise instead of giving into explosive emotions, knowing He is mighty enough to comfort us, for the Lord has a vast supply of riches and resources that will never run out.

Lord, Thank You for the blessings You bring. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
