[CF Devotionals] 2017-01-09 - Me? Worry?

- - - - - - -

When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. (Matthew 14:26 NIV)

Jesus’ disciples weren’t perfect. They had seen the Lord calm the sea and witnessed Jesus healing people, but the flesh was still a part of them. When they saw something unreal, out of this word - when their leader Jesus walked on water - naturally, they were terrified.

What has fear stolen from you? Thanks to fear, the disciples missed out on fully experiencing the miracle of Jesus walking on the water. The twelve weren’t the first to be afraid. The Bible is full of people who lived with fear.

  • Adam started it off by eating from the wrong tree and exposing the human race to good and evil. (Genesis 2:16-17, 3:1-10)
  • Sarai doubted God’s promise would come true. (Genesis 18:9-15)
  • Moses had low self-esteem and a fear of public speaking. (Exodus 4:10-16)
  • David lived life on the run. (Psalm 56)
  • Paul faced fears in Macedonia. (2 Corinthians 7:5-7)

In these cases, the Lord intervened by a word, thought, or action. God does not leave us to face the battle alone. Nothing we could fear is any match for the Lord.
