[CF Devotionals] 2016-12-21 - Hot and Cold

- - - - - - -

The heater in our house developed a malfunction this weekend, and we woke up Saturday morning to a temperature about ten degrees lower than where the thermostat was set. We are highly grateful for a roof over our head, layers we can wear, or add to the bed to keep us cozy as it begins to more commonly drop down to temperatures at or hovering just about freezing outside. It can be a bit of a shock to wake up feeling cold, after just a few weeks ago of feeling hot due to forgetting to flip thermostat over the cool when it was hotter outside. Fortunately these mechanical issues, due to weather changing, are often just a matter of a switch or a part being replaced, and then things can go back to status quo.

Spiritual fluctuations between hot and cold are, however, frowned upon by God. He wants us to not only be consistent in our thinking, but also our actions and habits, so we can give a good example to those we share faith with as well as to those with whom we do not share faith - that they may also know they have met our Father. God gives us the tools, and his strength will help keep our thermostats operating as they should, so even in split second someone will know Him - and perhaps will be left wondering how they, too, can find such joy and peace.

“So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:16)

“Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.” (John 14:8-10 NIV)

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)
