2016-07-25 - What Would Levi Say?
Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords. May I never come into their council; may I not be joined to their company – for in their anger they killed men, and at their whim they hamstrung oxen. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. (Genesis 49:5-7)
All the rest of Jacob’s sons received their comments from Dad individually, while Simeon and I were singled out and got ours together. Our father said my brother and I were alike, due to our violent streaks. He commented on our fierce anger and cruel wrath, and he claimed we’d be scattered among Israel. He said we were murderers, and that we hurt animals for fun. What does that say about him, being our dad?
Dad didn’t approve of our revenge tactics against Shechem and his people. Our cause was just. Shechem defiled our sister Dinah. Would Jacob rather forget that fact? Shechem was going to marry our sister, so that made everything ok? Not in our eyes. I didn’t think we went overboard for this “crime”.
Lord, Allow me to be slow to anger, so I don’t suffer the price for my actions and hurt others or myself. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
