2015-11-17 - Staying on Focus
Many of you are familiar with our dog Pierre, who died at age 15 in 2010, as well as our rescue dog Shiloh, who has been a member of our family for a little over a year. Pierre provided many varied adventures, as his interests seemed limitless. As I wrote several years ago, even rest stops became adventures. But Shiloh has her own personality and "mission." Armadillos, chipmunks and opossums barely earn a passing sniff, because she's all about cats - keeping them out of her yard, chasing them into the woods etc. And as birdwatchers who know that millions of wild birds are annually killed by cats, we appreciate that! That's her goal, her raison d'etre (purpose, literally reason of being), when she's outdoors. She's always looking, sniffing and running after felines.
That's how we need to be, in our relationships with God. Sometimes we allow ourselves to be so distracted, so that we forget our own raison d'etre - our relationship with God and seeking HIS will. Jesus instructed,
Matthew 6:33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
There's nothing wrong with most of our distractions - ministries, volunteer work, household responsibilities, hobbies etc., and many can even come from God Himself. But our primary mission or focus needs to always be following GOD's will in each situation.
