Recently, I had the privilege of playing the piano for the send-off to the director of a free clinic. The clinic and service were joint efforts of a Baptist church and ours. Right before the service, the Baptist minister told me that he was planning something special, a chance for every person to come to the front and individually say goodbye to Dr. Thom. With over 100 people, this would take awhile. He told the songleader, Joe and me that he wanted us to do the same song, "Here I am, Lord," over and over, until every person had sat back down. We questioned him, to be sure we understood-we were to sing the same three verses over and over until over 100 people made it through the reception line and shook the doctor's hand and bid him farewell? The answer was a definite yes. He said he hoped that those out in the pews would continue to sing verses 1-3 over and over. This minister had given us direction.

However, after we had sung each verse twice, my own minister looked at me and gave me an unmistakable sign (finger across his throat), to let me know I should stop playing that song, and held up a hymnbook to indicate I should switch to another song. Now he was giving us conflicting direction! What was I to do?

I realized that the only thing worse than having no director, was to have two conflicting directors! I thought later, that it's like that in life, too. Our lives should have only one director, God. Not our boss, nor our best friend nor even our spouse. For sure, we should consult and respect family, friends and leaders, if they are wise (especially if they are mature believers). But ultimately, our true Director is God. If there are conflicting directors in your life, pray with me, that we will always remember which Director should have the final say in our decisions.
