[CF Devotionals] 2014-04-07 - What Would James the Disciple Say?

- - - - - - -

Matthew 26:14-25, 36-50

Jesus replied, “Friend, do what you came for.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. (Matthew 26:50)

Jesus had just finished praying in the garden of Gethsemane, when Judas showed up, surrounded with a crowd carrying swords and clubs. What came over Judas? What was he thinking? He starts out treating us as pals, and when they least expected it, wham! He led the way for the arrest of Jesus. What possible motive could Judas have, for selling out a friend like that? What did he have to gain from turning over Jesus? Money. Judas received a month’s salary for bringing Jesus to the chief priests. I can’t believe it. How shallow can you get!

Earlier, Judas asked Jesus, point blank, if he was the betrayer. Judas didn’t blink an eye when Jesus answered yes. Jesus even spelled out what was going to happen to Judas, but he did not take the warning too seriously.

Jesus remained calm; He wasn’t surprised when Judas turned on Him. Our Lord even told Judas to proceed. He did not try to change the fallen disciple’s mind. He was ready to do the Lord’s will.

Lord, Forgive me when I get caught up in what money can bring. Help me to put it in perspective, and to be wise with my finances. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
