In Luke 12:13, Jesus is asked to help settle a dispute over dividing an estate. Jesus warned the brothers not to be greedy, and then he told an illuminating parable. He related the story of a rich man who had a farm, which produced abundant crops. Luke 12:17 says, “In fact, his barns were full to overflowing.” (NLT). The farmer decided to tear down his existing barns and build new ones to hold his crops. Then, he could sit back and take it easy. He planned to “eat, drink, and be merry” (Luke 12:19).

But his plans were for naught. God said to the rich farmer, “You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get it all? (Luke 12:20). Jesus explained that earthly riches were not important. Rather, we should concentrate on a rich relationship with God.

How often do we get caught up with earthly concerns? How often do we want to get the latest new toy or device? Where do we spend our time and money?

In this parable, Jesus is telling us to think beyond eartly matters and instead, to turn our attention to our Creator and Master.
