[CF Devotionals] 2014-03-18 - Listening to the Apostle Paul & Rodney King

- - - - - -

Some of you may remember the 1992 Rodney King case in the U.S. He was mocked for his simple question, but it bears repeating, for in actuality, he was echoing the Apostle Paul. Consequently, we Christians should give his question a lot of consideration: “Can’t we all just get along?” Rodney King - an unlikely sage.

As I am composing this devotional, the world is holding 239 people and their loved ones in our prayers and hearts, as a Boeing 777 jet, which disappeared on March 8th, has still not been found. Many questions remain unanswered. But one thing has been evident. Countries that have been feuding for many years, have come together to try to find this plane. Governments that are involved in territorial disputes with Malaysia, have nonetheless provided military equipment, radar and personnel, to assist in this endeavor.

Are the interactions always smooth? Of course not. We human beings are rarely incapable of that. Some tensions have simmered out, with some frustrations and kvetching, but still there is much heartwarming cooperation.

That reminds me of the Christian family. There will always be disagreements, because churches are made of humans. As someone said - and has been repeated many times - “If you ever found the perfect church, you couldn’t attend, because then it would not be perfect any more.” I can testify for myself, that would certainly be true, as I am far from perfect.

There always have been, and always will be, differing opinions and tensions regarding peripheral issues such as musical styles, decor, where to buy Easter Lilies (true story) and other such matters. Ideally these decisions will be made lovingly, respectfully and without favoritism, which is sinful (James 2:9). But regardless, we can still “get along” on the primary issues of the Gospel, and living out our faith by doing ministry together. We can still feed the poor, clothe the naked, help the homeless rebuild their lives, and any other ministry to which our Lord calls us.

As the Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans (12:18, MSG), “If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody.”
