John 15:16 You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
Jesus made the fact that His twelve disciples were selected specifically very clear in this verse. Not only were they chosen but there was an established reason they were chosen. In Matt 4:19 Jesus informs Simon (Peter) and Andrew that if they follow Jesus He will make them "fishers of men." Again chosen specifically and with a reason for their selection already in place beforehand.
Do you ever feel like Jesus may have made a mistake picking you? Do you wonder what in the world you can do for Him? First, if Jesus is God with us then God does not make mistakes. Above all, you are not a mistake. Genesis 9:6 tells us that we are made in God's image. What can you do? You might be amazed. Ask - pray seeking and be open. Be persistent and patient. The answers to prayer range from "yes", to "not yet", to "I have something better."
We are appointed (the reason) to "go and bear fruit" - telling others about Christ. You might say that was for the disciples. If you are a Christian, you should be a disciple of Christ too. No, you don't have to walk around wearing sandles and a robe and speak in thee's and thou's. You don't have to stand on street corners on a soap box - unless that is what you know He is asking you to do. Opportunities will come up where you can add Jesus to the conversation in helping someone.
We also have answered Jesus' call when He says, "Come. Follow me." Just like Jesus chose to call the first twelve disciples, He chose you too. Take that thought with you today.
