[CF Devotionals] 2014-01-06 - What Would Salome Say?

Matthew 14:3-11, Mark 6:16-28

Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” (Matthew 14:8 NIV)

At my uncle/stepfather’s birthday party, I danced for the king and his guests. This pleased the king so much so that he promised me anything, even half his kingdom. I really didn’t want to rule and make powerful decisions. A party with my friends could be nice, though. I immediately sought my mother’s counsel. She suggested John the Baptist's head on a platter. This was not at all what I expected her to say, I assure you.

It was unlawful for a brother to marry his brother’s wife while the sibling was still alive. (see Leviticus 18:16) John the Baptist vocally reminded King Herod of this fact. John’s words infuriated my mother Herodias. King Herod, my uncle/stepfather, arrested John for his comments but it did not stop my mom from loathing the prophet.

My mother saw my request as a way to put John in his place and make him pay for the suffering he had caused her. I valued my mom’s opinion, but she used me to get what she wanted. I obliged my mother and so did the king, although grudgingly. I brought John the Baptist’s head to my mother.

I wish my mother thought about the confusing time I was living in - having our family torn apart, not to mention having my uncle also be my stepfather, gross. Did she think her actions were worth it? Sometimes it would be nice if she listened to me or asked how I was feeling.

Lord, I never want to be like Herodias. Show me how to have a listening ear. May my child feel comfortable going to me for advice and may I be a help and not a hindrance. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
