Luke 7:11-17

When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her, and he said, “Don't cry.” (Luke 7:13 NIV)

Jesus and the rest of us, His disciples, had traveled to Nain. As Jesus approached the town’s gate, He saw a funeral procession. Jesus witnessed a woman crying. When He saw her, He knew all about her.

She was a widow, and they were burying her only son that day. This woman’s emotion touched Jesus enough for Him to personally get involved. He knew what the loss of her son’s life meant. Jesus told the woman not to cry. With many in attendance that day, Jesus was the only one who could take all her sorrow away. He had the answer to remove all her pain.

Jesus is concerned about our individual needs. He came to this woman’s aid, just as He comes to yours and mine. It didn’t matter if it interrupted the funeral proceedings or inconvenienced anyone. His focus was on this mother in her time of need. Jesus went to the coffin, touched it, and told the man to get up.

Jesus miraculously raised the son from the dead. The man sat up and began talking. Jesus gave him back to his mother. People who witnessed the miracle were filled with awe, praised God, and were convinced Jesus was a great prophet. Way to go, Jesus!

Before Jesus’ presence, the woman was without hope, and distraught about letting go of her child. Now she had her son back. No tears were needed, only rejoicing.

Lord, I praise Your holy name. You have answered my prayer - and how my countenance has changed. There is now hope and delight in each step. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
