[CF Devotionals] 2013-10-14 - What Would Lot’s Wife Say?

- - - - - - -

Genesis 19:15-29, Luke 17:32-33

But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. (Genesis 19:26 NIV)

I did not want to leave my home; neither did Lot or our two daughters. We procrastinated and left Sodom at the insistence of God’s messengers. Lot took his own sweet time escaping. He didn’t pick up the pace, so the angels literally had to grab the four of us. Lot didn’t suffer any consequences for his lack of faith, so why should I, his wife, if I looked back?

I heard the destruction and devastation behind me - all the people, buildings, animals, and vegetation of my homeland destroyed in an instant. The angels told us we would be destroyed if anyone looked back. I did not think a quick glance would do any harm. I was wrong.

I didn’t want to leave behind the comforts of home. I wanted to hang onto the past one last time; I demonstrated my strong-willed personality, and it cost me all that was dear.

Lord, May I not lean on fear when I am faced with challenges. I want to unchain myself from the familiar. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
