Mark 4:41 They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (NASB)

This is one of my favorite moments in scripture. Jesus dumbfounds His disciples with a command. I'm told if you read the original text that the storm they feared would drown them ceased at the Lord's command. Not that the storm ended and everything wound down as the storm passed. The waves and wind disappeared in a singular moment leaving the surface of the sea like the face of a newly minted coin. These were men knew this body of water well. They had grown up on it. If anyone had reason to feel they knew what to watch for and could handle what was dealt out it was them. And they woke Jesus in terror, afraid for their lives.

Then their fear turned to complete and utter astonishment and awe. With a word of command everything changed - in the blink of an eye. What kind of man was this Jesus? The Lord tipped His hand revealing His deity. I doubt seriously that any of them ever forgot that moment in time. Nor would we forget if we had been there. Power over the weather.

Jarius' daughter had died. Those attending to her as others ran to fetch Jesus to heal her had seen death before. They knew what had happened. Jesus sent them packing after they mocked Him for suggesting that the little girl was simply sleeping. This demonstration was not for everyone. The Master invited only the parents and His three closest followers. He knelt down and took her hand and said, "Little girl, arise." Her eyes opened, she sat up, got to her feet and walked over to her overjoyed parents. Power over death.

At His mother Mary's request Jesus turned water inside six large water pots into excellent wine at the wedding feast in Cana. Power over nature. The woman who touched the hem of His garment, and the leaper that Jesus kissed and both were healed instantly. Power of sickness and disease.

At His arrest Jesus reattached the ear of the servant who Peter had cut off with a poorly aimed swing of his sword. The pain was gone and there was no scar or mark that would indicate that the ear had ever been injured or removed. Power over pain and injury.

The list goes on and on.

It is truely impossible for us to completely understand the limitless power of the Godhead - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Any possible idea we could have to describe omnipotence could be out done. It's like trying to define infinity in finite terms. The most awesome demonstration of that power was to rescue creation at the cross and the tomb. "God so loved the world that He gave ..." beyond our comprehension. The One capable of all of this and more looked down through the tunnels of time and found each one of us and laid the plan to save us from what we deserved. The power over sin, death and betrayal, turning certain doom into an open door to Heaven. Selah.

Grace & Peace,
