[CF Devotionals] 2013-04-04 - Tail Lights

Heb 12:1-2 Therefore then, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us,

2 Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (AMP)

Several years ago I remember following a car that had no working brake lights. Everything else seemed fine but there was no standard warning that the vehicle was going to slow down from the red lights on the back of the car. I wasn't sure what to do. The car actually entered my apartment complex so I followed to its destination and waited for the driver to exit. They looked at me puzzled and I explained the problem. First they were relieved that I wasn't some crazy person following them, and then to know they had a problem that they would never have seen on their own.

People are like that too. We all have blind spots where problems can creep in where we are not always aware. It's a different issue for different people. And it can take a trusted friend to raise the careful warning that we're drifting into trouble. And we all have these blind spots. If you will humbly examine your heart it is there. The close inner circle of friends around you, the ones that know your strengths and weaknesses and love you anyway stand ready to let you know your brake lights are out. The Holy Spirit will touch your heart and mind when we drift finto darker waters. The danger is in dismissing that warning. Be humble and willing to accept it.

What was the prize that Jesus endured the cross to obtain? It was us! It was His creation that He loved enough to die to redeem from the slave market of sin. What are the things that slow us down and hold us back from moving ahead? Throw them off and follow Jesus. The Lord will delight in leading us home if we will let Him lead us there.

Grace & Peace,
