2013-03-11 - What Would a Host
Say?
Luke
14:16-24
At the time of the banquet, he sent his servant to tell
those who had been invited, 'Come, for everything is now
ready.' (Luke 14:17)
A lot goes in to getting a dinner party ready. Nothing is worse than at the
final hour, all the guests contact you - giving one excuse after another
- why they can't attend. That is just how it happened to me. All these people
waited until the last minute. It is natural for a few people to have previous
obligations or a change in one's schedule, but every guest?
What was going on? People had to eat, right? One told me he had to go check
on a piece of land he just bought. Another had to spend time with his family.
All were extremely inconsiderate, and must have known about their obligations
before now, if they are legitimate responsibilities. I was angry, and not
about to let my special meal go to waste.
So I brought in the poor and sick, people I had never met before that night.
When there was still room for more guests I extended the invitation to even
a wider base of strangers, until my home was full of visitors. I don't know
if my relationships with my originally-invited friends can be mended. I am
glad I was able to share my provisions with people who could be appreciative
and not insensitive.
I commit this day to You, Lord. In Jesus' name I pray,
Amen.
