2013-02-16 - Biblical Literacy
Before the Israelites went into the Promised Land, God gave Moses instructions and commandments on how they were to live when they got there. We are all familiar with the Ten Commandments. God told the people to "Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home, and when you walk down the road, when you sit down and when you get up." (Deuteronomy 6:7, NIV)
Recent surveys show that Americans are not that familiar with the Bible. On average, we can only name five of the Ten Commandments. Over 80 percent of Christians think the phrase that "God helps those who help themselves" is in the Bible. Many think that the Sermon on the Mount was given by Billy Graham. Our society has become Biblically illiterate.
What can we do? We should read and study our Bibles. We should talk about it in Sunday School and Bible study groups. We should talk about it among ourselves. The information we need is right in front of us. Will we take advantage of it?
