2012-12-31 - What Would Jonathan
Say?
1
Samuel 20:1-42
Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, for we have sworn
friendship with each other in the name of the Lord, saying, 'The Lord is
witness between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants
forever.'" Then David left, and Jonathan went back to the town. (Verse
42)
David had a plan to reveal if my father's trying to kill David. I was behind
David, and wanted to help him expose the truth. David was scheduled to eat
with Dad tomorrow.
Instead, David would hide out, while I ascertained my father's attitude toward
David. If my father wants to harm him, God strike me dead, if I don't get
word back to David in time. To my horror, David was right; his life is on
the line, and so was mine. Saul, my own father, even tried to kill me!
It was not fair. David had to go on the run, to save his life. Before David
left for safety, I asked God to watch over him. David and I made a solemn
vow that our friendship remains loyal. I was not ready - but needed to be
realistic; this may be the last time I would see my best friend. In case
I died first, David promised to demonstrate the love and kindness of God
to my children. That vow of friendship was all I had to cling onto.
Lord, Help me on the road to healthy friendships. In
Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
