2012-09-29 - Persistent Prayer
Jesus told two parables about the importance of prayer. This week we will
look at the "Parable of the Persistent Widow," which is found in Luke 18:1-8.
Verse 1 says,
"Then Jesus told his disciples a parable, to show them
that they should always pray and not give up." (NIV) Jesus explains
that a widow repeatedly appeared before the same judge, to plea for justice
against her adversary. The judge, who wasn't a follower of God, refused her
request. The widow continued to show up and present her demand for justice.
Finally, the judge, wearied by her persistence, granted her request. Jesus
explains the parable, saying, "Will not God bring about
justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night?" (Luke
18:7)
Jesus encouraged his disciples to be persistent in prayer. We are to do the
same today. We need to continually bring our requests to God. He has promised
that He will bring about justice for us. As Paul tells us, we are to
"pray continually." (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
