2011-08-08 - Adam and Eve and Temptation
We are all familiar with the story of Adam and Eve found in Genesis. They were placed in the Garden of Eden, to work in it and to take care of it. Adam and Eve had everything they needed - food, shelter, and companionship. Adam and Eve had it made. What went wrong?
The crafty serpent came to Adam and Eve and told them that things could be even better. The serpent tried to convince them that God was keeping them from ultimate happiness. God had warned Adam and Eve not to eat of the tree in the middle of the garden. But in Genesis 3:5 the serpent says, "God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (NIV)
Adam and Eve fell to the temptation and ate the fruit. They paid the consequences by being thrown out of the Garden of Eden. They had to go to work out in the world. They ultimately paid for their mistake, by suffering physical death.
What temptations do we face today? Do we want to take the easy way out? Do we doubt God's directions?
We can learn from Jesus when he was tempted in the desert by the devil. Jesus was able to resist the devil, by relying on God's Word to combat the devil's wiles.
We all face temptation every day. Temptations are like tests. Who will you rely upon to help you face your temptation - God's Word or the devil?
