2011-04-24 - What Would Pontius Pilate Say?
"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, Crucify him!" (Matthew 27:23)
When I asked Jesus if He was the king of the Jews, He did not give me a direct yes or no response. He only agreed that my words were accurate. This is more than the chief priests and elders were able to get out of Jesus. He did not respond to any of their remarks. I don't understand why Jesus is not offering a defense, or trying to clear His name. He could put His accusers to shame, and yet He did and said nothing. He was letting them win.
I asked the crowd which man they wanted released. A known criminal or a known healer. The request was more out of protocol. The people shouted to crucify Jesus. That's a strong choice for someone who has done nothing wrong. Have the people lost their senses? They were willing to let Barabbas go free. They must be kidding. An innocent man versus a guilty man. I asked the crowd on what ground they wanted Jesus crucified. They just chanted more loudly.
This is the one time I did not want the responsibility of being a governor. Even though I had the power, I was powerless. I needed the people to know I was not responsible for their decision. That did not faze them. The crowd was even willing to suffer the consequences of sending Jesus Christ to die. I felt so helpless, especially as I watched the soldiers take Him away, knowing Jesus' fate.
Lord, Don't let me follow the crowd when I do not agree with them. Help me have the courage to stand up for my beliefs and values. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
As governor, would you have treated the situation differently than Pontius Pilate?
