[CF Devotionals] 2010-12-04 - Thoughtful Spending

Psalms 112: 5 A good man showeth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.

I've been thinking about this quite a bit. I (as I'm sure you, too) have gotten literally thousands of spam e-mails from people claiming, in some fashion, to need my help to get them (or me) my millions that I have coming to me. I haven't entered any foreign lottery, worked overseas, sold anything or done anything else to earn this money, but somehow I have millions coming to me. There are people in the online dating services who start off wonderfully, but are soon asking for money. My neighbor's son is still in the process of figuring out that the woman to whom he has sent hundreds of dollars isn't really coming to meet him. She keeps having "one difficulty after another".

The last part of this verse is the part that grabs my attention - "he will guide his affairs with discretion". "Discretion" and "guide" are the two keywords here. Thought and motive. Intelligence and wisdom. It's not always the scams that get our money. Thoughtless spending. No plan of action. No guide. No time spent thinking it through. See-want-buy. See-want-spend.

Proverbs 19:17 - He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. I've been rereading my "Lord's Prayer" series along with the rest of you, and I have been relearning concepts. If I spend all the money I have on things I see and want, but don't need, I am taking money away from those whom God puts in front of me to help. If I am chasing things that aren't mine, I spend it up.

Eternity is calling. The things that we buy today will rot or gather moths. The things that we "pay forward" to our eternal bank account will last forever. How am I using the resources God gives me? How are you spending your money? With discretion? Food for thought.

Father, I am guilty. There isn't much discretion in my daily spending of Your resources. Please forgive me. Thank You that You have kept me from falling for a scam, but, Lord, it's the little things that eat away at the linings of my pocketbook. Please, protect me from thoughtless spending. Help me, Lord, to use the money You give me wisely. With thought and discretion. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen
