2009-07-19 - Oh! The Positions We Pray
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.(Philippians 4:6-7 NIV)
Below, you will find a number of different prayer positions people chose to pray.
Bow: Exodus 34:8-9
Before seeking forgiveness, Moses bowed his head and worshiped the Lord. (See also Exodus 4:1-31 and Psalm 138:1-8)
Kneel: Daniel 6:6-10
Now when Daniel learned that there was a decree banning him from worshiping the Lord had been published, he went home to his upstairs room, where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day, he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. (See also 2 Chronicles 20:5-13 and Ephesians 3:14-20)
Look toward Heaven: Daniel 4:34
Nebuchadnezzar looked up toward Heaven and blessed the Lord.
Sit: 1 Chronicles 17:16-24
David sat down and glorified the Lord.(See also 2 Samuel 7:18-29)
Stand: Luke 18:9-14
Both a Pharisee and a tax collector chose to pray while standing. While the tax collector was ashamed to look up, he was genuinely sorry for his sins, the Pharisee prayed silently, thanking God. He reminded God of his good deeds like fasting and tithing, not that God could have forgotten, but the religious leader wanted his deeds fresh and in the forefront of His mind.(See also Psalm 26:11-12 and Mark 11:24-27)
Thank You, God for Your majesty, bountiful to cover my mistakes. I thank You for receiving my praises and prayers. It does not matter if I am sitting or standing, You will hear my voice when I call. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
