[CF Devotionals] 2008-12-07 - Ruth: The Work of a Wife

Installment 33 ~ Chapter 4, Part 4

Trait 3: The virtuous wife is diligent in her labor. It isn't enough to "like" what you are doing, it is also important to be hard-working. The ultimate example of this is marriage. If one is to have a successful marriage, one must work at it. Being in love, getting married for love, isn't enough to make a marriage work. Men and women must work at marriage, to keep it alive and well.

"She said, `Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.' She went into the field and has worked steadily from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter." So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah. So Ruth stayed close to the servant girls of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law." (Ruth 2:7, 17, 23)

"She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar."

"She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings, she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her Hand, she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness" (Proverbs 31:14-21, 24, 27).
